We had a sparrow pie

Dear Mother.

I received your loving letter and fags with thanks and I am sorry to say that I have been on the sick list these last two days. I have got a good billet in the way of food but I am sleeping on a mattress with only one blanket.  There is a chap that is billeted with me expecting going in another regiment and when he goes I shell try and get Harry with me, then he came and had his Sunday dinner with me last Sunday and he did seem to enjoy it. We had a sparrow pie.

They have gave me two more shirts, two pairs of pants and two pairs of socks. I have got to have another new suit and another pair of boots. I think I shall be set up then. Remember me to Aunt Rachel and Uncle Bill and give my best of love to Dad and all at home and receive the same from your loving soon.
