We had a sweep of the big race

Dear Mother,

I am sorry to have not wrote before, but I have not had time to write at all. Tell Lily not to send any boxes this week as it is a big expense but tell her to send me a list of money by return of post so that I can pay my sweep and to buy some papers because we have an officer coming to our room now and they will not let speak because of disturbing the poor thing. We had a sweep of the big race on Wednesday, 12 of us had 2d each, it made the winner 1 shilling and the 2nd 8d and the third 4d. I got the third but I owed it to a chap. Tell Bridgette I will write and answer her letter as soon as I can get some writing paper and I will also answer Joe’s. Remember to tell Harriet and Dad and all the children I hope to be out of here by the end of next week.

I will now close with love,

George
